In order to protect our users’ privacy and safety online and discourage off-platform work, all freelancer last names are truncated to last initial only before freelancers and clients connect in an interview on Upwork Messages. This allows both parties to maintain some anonymity until they both agree to enter the interviewing stage.
This is how it looks:
Freelancer last names will be truncated in these areas of the site:
- Visitor site
- User site - Freelancer search
- Proposals
All freelancers' full names will be searchable via google search (or any other search engine). However, they will no longer have the option to make their last name visible to clients on Upwork’s freelancer search (visitor site and user site) or when they submit proposals. Only after the freelancer and client are interviewing will their full name be visible.
FAQs
Freelancer Question
I prefer to show my full name to clients on Upwork - why is this not showing?
We have this feature in place in order to protect our users’ privacy and safety online and to prevent off-platform work. Both freelancer and client maintain some anonymity until they agree to start the interview process.
Client Questions
I can’t do my due diligence on a freelancer before I invite them to connect.
We understand that this can be frustrating. We think a freelancer’s profile, client reviews, work history, Job Success Score, and any other profile information offer enough information about the freelancer pre-interview.
When will I be able to see the freelancer’s full name?
You will be able to see your freelancer’s full name after you and your freelancer connect in an interview through Upwork Messages.
