(Internal Only) - Previously, if a client had both a client and a freelancer profile with the same username, they were able to hire themselves as a freelancer. This ability is a risk to Trust & Safety as it may not prevent fraud and money laundering.

Now, clients are not be able to hire a freelancer with the same UID as them. If they try, they will receive an error message at the time of hire:

“This action is not supported on Upwork. You are not able to contract with yourself.”

Frequently Asked Questions

I have both a client and a freelancer account. Why can’t I hire myself as a freelancer?

Thanks for your question. To prevent fraud, clients are not able to contract with freelancers on Upwork who have the same username as they do.

I work for a company that has an Upwork account that I am a member of. Can the company hire me as a freelancer as well?

Yes, that is up to you and the company. As long as you have a separate freelancer profile with a unique username you can contract with a client with a different username than you.
