We’re providing tips to encourage talent to improve their cover letters by encouraging the inclusion of work samples and specific examples of demonstrated skills, which will lead to improved alignment during the match process driving an increase in hires, particularly among non-top rated talent, and successful contract starts. Better alignment of skills, experience and past deliverables will help clients more clearly identify the right talent for the work which will lead to more successful outcomes.
Front end
- When user enters 200 characters into the cover letter input field the experience populates below the cover letter input field
- Experience offers talent the opportunity to request tips for their cover letter
- If talent are not interested in tips, they may collapse/hide the experience
- If talent is interested in tips, they may click the CTA which populates a loading screen
- Tips, generated by openAI, are then displayed via a carousel above the cover letter.
- The talent may collapse/hide the tips if they wish
- Talent will have the option to receive a maximum of two rounds of tips per visit to the proposal page
- If the talent requests a 2nd round tips, they are again displayed above the cover letter.

- If talent requests tips, an API call is made to OpenAI and the following information is passed: talent skills (from their profile), talent input cover letter for the job, job description
- OpenAI evaluates the provided inputs based on set prompts and pass generated response back to Upwork

Can I switch between asking questions as a client or as a freelancer?
Currently, your selection and conversation is kept for two hours from when you first start asking your questions to Upwork chat. After that, you’ll be able to select a new option. If you’d like to switch selections immediately, for this beta we recommend changing to an incognito browser and starting a new chat.
How is Upwork handling privacy considerations with features powered by OpenAI technologies?
Upwork chat has a disclaimer to inform you that you should not share personal information in the chat. Any information provided will be subjected to OpenAI’s Privacy Policy.
Does Upwork chat save my responses?
Upwork chat is always learning from the conversations it has and improving it’s knowledge base. User questions are part of that process. If a user returns to Upwork within two hours and chooses to use Upwork chat again, the user will see their previous conversation is still saved so they can start from where they left off. We calculate the two hour timeframe starting from when the user first interacted with Upwork chat). We will retain the conversation in our logs so that we may understand how users interact with the chatbot and improve the experience. Retention policy is up to 1 year.
How did we train Upwork chat?
Upwork chat is powered by OpenAI technologies which was trained on data through September 2021. In addition, Upwork chat is trained on information from Upwork’s support pages to bridge the gap between 2021 - current day.
How are we making sure that Upwork chat doesn’t pull help articles about features that have been sunset?
We have manually removed all help articles related to any features or products that have been sunset/are no longer available on Upwork from Upwork chat’s repository of information. Upwork chat will never reference the information in these articles even if asked.
Is Upwork chat available in multiple languages?
Upwork chat is currently available in English. However, users are able to prompt Upwork chat in all languages supported by OpenAI technologies. Currently, that includes English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and more. Translation/localization is not done by Upwork, so we do not recommend these additional languages proactively to our users.
Is this available for Enterprise Suite customers?
Upwork chat is available to a subset of visitors on the Upwork website. It is not available on the Enterprise Suite microsite or to logged in users. This means if an Enterprise customer visits the Upwork.com homepage, they may see Upwork chat, but we are not placing it on surface areas where Enterprise clients are likely to see it.
How are we protecting against inappropriate or inaccurate responses?
Upwork chatbot leverages ChatGPT, which is designed to reject inappropriate requests and redirect to more appropriate discussions. On top of that, we implemented prompt engineering to help constrain the topic and tone of Upwork chat’s output text. This reduces the chance of producing undesired content, even if the user tries to produce it.
Regarding inaccurate responses, this ties back to how we trained Upwork chat. Given that ChatGPT is only trained until September 2021, we have fed Upwork chat with current Upwork support pages so that it may provide more updated, accurate information.
It is important to note that these guardrails are not foolproof measures. While there are safeguards in place, Upwork chat may occasionally generate inappropriate or inaccurate information, which is one reason the feature is in beta. We will be consistently iterating based on what we learn in this first quantitative test (QT) launch.
When will Upwork chat be available for all visitors on our website? When will it be available for logged-in users?
The quantitative test (QT) for Upwork chat will be running through the month of July, after which we will evaluate its performance. Based on this evaluation and other possible factors, we will expand the audience to include all visitors on the homepage. We do not yet have a timeline for when this will be available for logged-in users.
Will Upwork chat be available on all Upwork pages?
No; Upwork chat will only be available on the homepage and top 10 logged-out pages.

How much do I need to write in my proposal in order to see the option for proposal tips?
When the option for proposal tips appears in the proposal flow, you will need to enter at least 200 characters in order to get proposal tips.
Why can I only use proposal tips twice per proposal?
Proposal tips are meant to generate new ideas to support your existing proposal. We’ve found that two rounds of tips is a helpful amount to guide your work.
Can proposal tips help me re-write certain portions of my proposal?
Proposal tips will always be offered as a bulleted list of suggestions that can help you to clarify parts of your proposal. The feature is not meant to provide new content for “copy and paste” use in the proposal.
