If you receive any contacts related to this, please add this tag only macro: Tag Only::Aging Balances of 180 Days Initiative

Upwork is not a bank or payment transfer agency, we cannot maintain balances for more than 180 days, per our Terms of Service.

We have a system feature that checks the age of freelancer payments. Once a freelancer’s payment transaction reaches 180 days old, the system will disburse the funds to the freelancer’s active withdrawal method. However, freelancers can bill and track time on contracts without an active withdrawal method. If the freelancer’s withdrawal method is not active or does not exist, the system will not disburse funds according to the 180-day schedule.

We plan on emailing FLs with balances in their account older 180 days to withdraw their funds. These FLs will get continuous emails for 4 weeks until they withdraw their funds.

If users do not withdraw their funds after the 4 weeks, we will begin manually disbursing funds to their disbursement method, or pause their contracts until they add a payment method and withdraw their funds.

Frequently Asked Questions

FREELANCERS:

Why can’t I just keep my money in my Upwork account? What’s the big deal?

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, because Upwork is not a bank or payment transfer agency, we cannot maintain balances for more than 180 days, per our Terms of Service.

What if I can’t add a payment method right now?

IF CURRENTLY SUSPENDED:

Thanks for reaching out. We do need you to withdraw your earnings as soon as possible. As of now, your account will remain on hold and you will not be able to submit proposals for new jobs or enter into new contracts. Any submitted proposals for open jobs will be canceled and your Connects will not be returned or refunded. We are sorry to have to take this step, but we cannot hold your funds any longer, per our Terms of Service. To add a payment method, click here.

IF NOT SUSPENDED YET:
Thanks for reaching out. We understand it might take a few days for you to add a payment method to your Upwork account. At this time, you may continue using Upwork as usual. However, if you have not withdrawn your funds by May xx, 2019, we will place a temporary hold on your Upwork account and you will not be able to enter into new contracts until your balance has been withdrawn. Also, any submitted proposals will be canceled and your Connects will not be refunded if a hold is placed on your account. To add a payment method, click here.

My account was suspended because I couldn’t/didn’t withdraw my money (and it was a balance 180+ days old). What should I do?

Thanks for your question. To get your Upwork account fully restored: 1. Add a payment method. Please note that it will take a few days before the payment method becomes active to accept withdrawals. 2. Withdraw your funds when your payment method is active. Once you’ve withdrawn your funds your Upwork account will be fully restored within 48 hours.

I need more time before I can withdraw. Can you give me more time?

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, we cannot give you more time to resolve this issue and your Upwork account will remain on hold until you are able to withdraw your earnings.

Please refund my Connects! My proposals are withdrawn and I didn’t get my Connects back, why?

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, as we previously notified you, we cannot refund or return any lost Connects in this case, as they were lost due to you being in violation of our Terms of Service. Our terms do not permit a balance to be held on Upwork for more than 180 days.

Can I just withdraw part of my balance?

Thanks for reaching out. No, at this point, we need you to withdraw your total balance. To do so, click here.
