Upwork for Freelancers App

Previously, Upwork users were unable to access all of Upwork’s capabilities from their iOS or Android applications.

Soon, our community of freelancers, agencies, and clients will be able to do nearly everything they do from their desktop and mobile browsers from their mobile app, so they can stay connected to Upwork on the go.

Both IOS and Android app will also be released with the name “Upwork for Freelancers” and the legacy app will remain as “Upwork”.

In the last phase of update, we will nudge clients onto the new app and will change the name from “Upwork for Freelancers” to “Upwork”. Ultimately, there will only be one Upwork Android app and we will retire the legacy Android app.

Transaction History will show “Paid from Apple In-App Purchase” indicating the Plus membership is purchased via In-App.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s so great about the new iOS mobile app?

Thanks for your question. You told us how important it is to do more than just chat, view projects, and send files like our old app does. Now, with the new mobile app, you can do everything you normally do from your desktop browser while on the go.

What’s so great about the new Android mobile app?

Thanks for your question. You told us how important it is to do more than just chat, view projects, and send files like our old app does. Now, with the new mobile app, you can do everything you normally do from your desktop browser while on the go.

Why did this take so long? Why now?

Thanks for reaching out. Due to our quick, sustained growth we’ve been primarily focused on improving our mobile browser. However, we heard you and understand how important it is for our mobile app to be just as great as our mobile and desktop browsers. As a result, we made it a priority this year to make sure you can access nearly all of Upwork from your iOS and Android apps.

Why are there two Upwork apps in the Apple store and Google Play store?

Thanks for your question! To ensure our mobile apps include all of the capabilities our community uses the most, we decided to build one from scratch. Until we finish migrating freelancers, agencies and eventually clients to the new app, you will see two Upwork apps in the Apple and Google Play stores.

I have client and freelancer accounts. Which app should I use?

Thanks for reaching out. If you use Upwork as a freelancer (for work) and as a client (to hire), you should keep both apps for now. The new iOS and Android apps are currently for freelancers only, but will eventually become the sole app for all Upwork users, clients included. We’ll let you know when that happens.

Can I use my same login info on the new app?

Thanks for your question. Yes, you can continue using your same freelancer login info on the new app.

Where or how can I provide feedback?

Thanks for your question. Feedback is always welcome! You can email your feedback to ios-feedback@upwork.com or android-feedback@upwork.com.

Why did you release the Android app after the iOS app?

Thanks for your question. We wanted to ensure we released our apps as soon as they were ready. We completed the iOS app first.

Will there be a separate client app soon, too?

Thanks for your question. We will not be releasing a new app for clients. Instead, we plan to add client-specific features, transition clients on to the new app and retire the old one.

How can I download the Upwork app?

Thanks for your question! You can download the new iOS app here.

You can download the new Android app here

I downloaded the new iOS / Android app. Should I delete the old one?

Thanks for reaching out. If you use Upwork as a freelancer (for work) and as a client (to hire), you should keep both apps for now. The new iOS and Android apps are currently for freelancers only, but will eventually become the sole app for all Upwork users, clients included. We’ll let you know when that happens.

If you exclusively use Upwork as a freelancer (for work), you can delete the old app.

Are all features/capabilities accessible through the app?

Thanks for your question. We made sure to include all of the functionality our community of freelancers use the most. This includes everything from searching for jobs to getting paid. Unlike the old app, you can also get notifications, link payment accounts, and verify your identity when submitting proposals for U.S. jobs. However, freelancers working with Enterprise clients will need to continue using their desktop to complete some actions.

Upwork for Clients App

Previously, Upwork users were unable to access all of Upwork’s capabilities from their iOS or Android applications.

Soon, our community of clients will be able to do nearly everything they do from their desktop and mobile browsers from their mobile app, so they can keep their projects moving on Upwork while on the go.

There will be a phased rollout approach.

  • Phase 1: Silent launch to vet stability and major issues.
  • Phase 2: roll out to “power client users” to vet performance of key features, then ramp up usage to all clients
  • Phase 3: force all clients onto the new app

The new iOS app will be released with the name “Upwork for Clients” and the legacy app will remain as “Upwork”. However, to minimize confusion in the app store, we plan to badge the old app with an “Obsolete” flag. Once a majority of client users move onto the new app, we will retire the old one completely.

Target Audience

With the initial launch freelancers and agencies will be able to subscribe to ‘Freelancer Plus’ and ‘Agency Plus’ from within “Upwork for Freelancers” iOS app.

With subsequent releases freelancers and agencies will be able to buy Connects, then client users will be able to subscribe to Upwork Plus membership plan using “Upwork for Clients” iOS app and finally client users will be able to buy Featured Job using “Upwork for Clients” iOS app.

Current user experience

In-app purchase is not supported. All functionalities related to upgrading memberships and purchasing Connects are suppressed in the mobile apps.

New user experience

Upgrade from Freelancer Basic to Freelancer Plus or Agency Basic to Agency Plus

After we launch IAP for freelancer and agency membership, users will see the menu items to subscribe for Freelancer or Agency Plus memberships. They will be able to complete the flows within the app and pay using Apple. Experience for subscribing to Freelancer Plus will be as described on the image below. Upgrade to Agency Plus will be very similar experience as the one just described.

Downgrade from Freelancer Plus to Freelancer Basic or Agency Plus to Agency Basic

If FL Plus or Agency Plus were originally bought from the iOS app, then the user can downgrade only from the iOS app. Users cannot downgrade an IAP subscription from desktop or mobile web. Below is the flow.

Subscription renewals

IAP subscriptions require modifying existing subscription renewal logic. Apple automatically charges the user for renewals. Since Upwork does not charge the user, the subscription renewal logic is dependent whether Apple is able to successfully renew the subscription.

Sign-in with Apple

Customers can sign up with Upwork using an Apple account using the iOS apps, mWeb or desktop and can sign in using an Apple account on all platforms. This was released to all customers in November 2020.

Important: if a customer opts to hide their email address from us when turning on their Apple SSO, their email address on file will show up to us in this format: ******@privaterelay.appleid.com If working with a customer with this email address and having trouble going through security verification, be sure to check the **Security Verification KB for verification steps under “”Is the email address on the account an Apple ID”.

What does sign in look like after creating an account?

1. When signing in, the customer can click “Sign in with Apple” (if they don’t click that button, but do enter in their email address they used to sign up with, we’ll still recognize it as an “Apple sign up” and the following flow should be similar for them)

2. They’ll be directed to this screen where they can click “Continue with Apple”
