Form 6166 is a letter on U.S. Department of Treasury letterhead certifying that the individuals or entities listed are residents of the United States for purposes of the income tax laws of the United States. If you receive a request for a 6166 form from a user follow the process below:
- If a freelancer's contact us requesting a 6166 form, we should try to get the FL to accept a copy of the form via ticket first. PDFs of all available forms are linked to the bottom of this document.
- Sending via FedEx should be a last resort as it is expensive to send to Europe. If the freelancer insists on a hard copy:
a. Email enterprisebilling@upwork.com cc’ing Katt and Charlene, with a completed copy of the table below.
b. Let the freelancer know you’ve made the request and place the ticket on hold.
c. The team will email you once the transaction is complete and will include the FedEx TRX number as confirmation.
d. Send the FedEx TRX number to the freelancer via the ticket and solve.
